Rick Spiegel (W0RIC) - On-the-air Communications Support

We were also supported by DGES's PTA and student mothers throughout the day - their efforts were greatly appreciated.

The schedule for the day included the following;

4th Grade Class Students; 30 Students

8:00 AM to 8:45 AM - Fabricate Ground Radials for Clubs Vertical Antenna - All the kids learned how to design and fabricate ground radials for the clubs vertical antennas. After learning about the mathematical formulas, the kids calculated the dimensions for 20, 15 and 10 meter bands. Five ground radials were fabricated for each band and mounted on the vertical antenna for use later in the day.

8:45 AM to 10:00 AM - Kids talk with Joe Rudi (NK7U) on-the-air. All the 4th Grade kids participated in operating the K6DGE Club Station and working Joe Rudi (NK7U) from his home location in Oregon. Joe was so wonderful with the kids sharing his experiences in ham radio and his successes as a  Left Fielder, Professional Baseball Player; Over 19 years - Oakland A's and Anaheim Angels.

10:00 AM to 11:00 AM - Kids Prepare Letters and Drawings About Amateur Radio and Practice Technician Class Exam Questions. The kids worked on finishing their letters and drawings regarding amateur radio that they had started earlier in the week and review practice Technician Class Exam questions.

11:00 AM to 11:30 AM - Kids are introduced to Paul Ewing (N6PSE). Paul talks to the kids about his IT profession, family and experiences with Amateur Radio.

DGES Amateur Radio Club Students and 4th Grade Class Students; 48 Students

11:30 AM to 1:45 PM - Kids take time for Pizza Lunch and get on the air to operate from two K6DGE stations. DGES's PTA purchased Pizza for the kids and the kids were able to rotate using two ICOM HF radios making QSO's with other ham radio operators in Oregon, Alberta, Canada, Colorado, New Jersey, Minnesota and Illinois.

The kids were on a half-day schedule which made it nice to include the normal after school Amateur Radio Club Students with the 4th Grade Class Students. The age of these students ranged from 8-10 years old.

1:45 PM to 3:30 PM - Kids take the FCC Amateur Radio Technician Class License exam in the schools cafeteria. It was wonderful to have 48 kids preparing and taking the FCC Amateur Radio Technician Class License exam. Four students passed the exam with another 12 that came very close to passing. In all, all the kids did well and showed improvement and knowledge in radio communications, electronics and mathematics. I'm very proud of each of them to attempt a very difficult exam at such a young age. I didn't pass my Novice Class License until I was in the 11th Grade (16 years old).

Each student received a Certificate of Participation and a ICOM sponsored gift bag.
